Rules and how to play
Common modern reconstructed short route, not a claim to complete ancient rules. Two players race seven pieces. Four fair binary dice produce 0–4. Roll, then move one piece that many steps; entering counts as a step. There are fourteen spaces, followed by an exact step off the board. Do not land on your own piece. The middle eight spaces are shared: landing on an opponent sends it to the reserve, except the protected central rosette. Rosettes at route spaces 4, 8 and 14 grant another roll. Zero or no legal move means pass. First to bear off seven wins.
